Secretary's Message
These are exciting times for The Society for Heart Valve Disease! As you might have seen from our re-vamped website, in October last year we appointed a professional management company, PRRI, to run the Society. PRRI is based in Boston, Massachusetts and has a wealth of experience in the management of professional societies, especially in the medical field.
Since the Society was founded in 1999 it has been run by a small number of its members with the help of an administrative assistant for 16 hours per week. While we have successfully held five Biennial Meetings over this time, there are many other things that we should be capable of achieving. To this end the Council believed that professional help is what was required.
Highlights of the SHVD 6th Biennial Program
The conference will kick off with the Postgraduate Course on June 25. World renowned experts will be presenting their research, experience, insights, and opinions on several important topics that are at the forefront of current heart valve therapy.
Survival after AVR in young adults:
Survival in young adult patients after mechanical aortic valve replacement is reported to be significantly reduced compared to general age- and gender-matched population, while survival after the Ross procedure is excellent and comparable to general population. There is an ongoing debate whether the excellent survival rates observed in Ross patients are a consequence of a haemodynamically superior valve and low valve-related complication rates, or patient selection.
driven by prosthesis type or patient selection?
