    President's Message
It is amazing how busy 2011 has been for The Society for Heart Valve Disease. Our grandest activity of the year was the 6th Biennial Meeting of the SHVD, held in Barcelona this past June - I am proud to report it was a great success with global participation and an incredibly talented roster of speakers. Having hosted the Society and the meeting in Barcelona, my hometown, gave me a personal sense of pride and I hope that all attendees were able to explore and take in all that makes Barcelona such a wonderful city.

    President-Elect’s Message
With the close of 2011 now coming upon us I am pleased to inform the membership that this past year has been a most successful one for The Society for Heart Valve Disease. Our 6th Biennial Meeting, held last June in Barcelona, was a wonderful program with attendees and speakers coming from numerous countries as well as participation by many of our industry colleagues. I would like to thank both Dr. Jose Pomar for being our host for the congress in Barcelona, and Dr. Michael Borger for developing such an educational and enjoyable program.

    and Tissue Engineering

It was great to see and talk with so many members of the Society at the 6th Biennial meeting held in Barcelona during the summer. There is always great interest in the meeting from the clinical and scientific communities who share an interest in heart valve disease. However, it is disappointing that the size of the Society’s membership isn’t reflected by the number people who submit abstracts or the delegates who register and attend the meeting. Due to the improved promotion of the Society, membership numbers are beginning to increase.

This past June, the 6th Biennial Meeting of The Society for Heart Valve Disease was held at the Palau de Congressos De Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain with over 500 professionals in attendance from 50 different countries. It was truly an international meeting, which fostered an atmosphere perfect for knowledge exchange and expression of diverse perspectives. 124 podium presentation and 177 posters were featured during the conference and numerous experts presented during the pre-meeting Post Graduate course and general program. In addition, Dr. Chitwood delivered the Honoured Lecture entitled, "Mitral Valve Repair: Souttar's finger to daVinci's hands" which was an educational highlight of the conference.

The Society’s current President, Dr. Jose Luis Pomar, served as a gracious host during the 2011 conference. Attendees very much enjoyed the social events, including the Welcome Reception and Presidential Dinner, and attractions Barcelona had to offer. 15 industry partners of the Society supported the meeting through exhibition and/or sponsorship; their participation and attendance contributed to the meeting’s success.
